It may be surprising to many to learn that we experience trance states many times in the course of our lives. Even passing into ordinary sleep involves a kind of trance state. The experience of hypnosis is similar: neither asleep nor awake and a little like daydreaming, with a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation behind it all.
Hypnosis is a different state of consciousness which you can naturally enter so that, for therapeutic purposes, beneficial corrections may be given directly to your unconscious mind. In this way, hypnosis is an effective way of making contact with our inner unconscious self, which is both a reservoir of unrecognised potential and knowledge as well as being the unwitting source of many of our problems.
It is a fact that no-one can be hypnotised against their will and even when hypnotised, a person can still reject any suggestion. Thus therapeutic hypnosis is a state of purposeful (confidential) co-operation.
What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
Clinical Hypnotherapy is an established complementary therapy with an excellent track record. Clinical hypnotherapy is highly cost effective with patient benefit often being achieved rapidly. Also clinical hypnotherapy can be successful where other interventions have not produced the desired outcome.
What exactly is involved?
An optional initial meeting (30 mins max) is often available to informally explore your needs and for you to ask any questions that you might have. This meeting is generally free of charge. The number of hypnotherapy sessions required thereafter ranges from 1 to 3-5 sessions of approx 1-2 hours duration. If formal trance is used during the session you will probably experience the pleasant, relaxing feeling of being in trance for approx 30-45 mins.
Hypnotherapy sessions are customised to your individual needs and wants, and your beliefs are respected at all times. If you want a specific technique or approach to be used or avoided then your treatment plan will be adjusted in accordance with your wishes.
Clinical hypnotherapy is often used in conjunction with NLP Techniques and cognitive / behavioural methods - the approach adopted is defined by the needs of the individual and the nature of the presenting issue(s).
What hypnotherapy is not
Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand that can cure all problems instantly. Results with hypnotherapy can often be very rapid, but this can vary greatly between individuals. On average treatment via hypnotherapy is more rapid than is the case via many other forms of psychotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is not an effort free treatment, it is however true to say that for some people the change process can appear to be almost effortless. In many cases you will be given things to do when back at home, relaxation techniques for example, and doing those things often vital to overall, long term success. As with all things in life you tend to get out of it what you put into it.
Although hypnotherapy can be very motivational and can amplify existing motivation, it is not a replacement for motivation. As with all forms of psychotherapy there needs to be a reasonable level of motivation present. Psychotherapy generally is not necessarily suitable for all people at all times. Sometimes a more pharmacological approach is much more appropriate. In such cases medication in effect opens the door and hypnotherapy can help thereafter to keep it open.
What to expect
You are fully in control when under hypnosis and don't have to take on the therapist's suggestions if you don't want to. If necessary, you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.
Hypnosis doesn't work if you don't want to be hypnotised.
According to Cancer Research UK, most cancer patients say they have had a positive experience with hypnotherapy, although it has made some feel vulnerable and anxious.
When you shouldn't use hypnotherapy
You shouldn't use hypnotherapy if you suffer from psychosis or have a personality disorder as it could make these conditions worse. If you have any type of mental health problem or serious illness such as cancer, make sure the hypnotherapist is trained in working with your particular condition.
Hypnotherapy should not be used on clients with heart disorders, a history of brain damage, a fitted pacemaker. Other conditions (where hypnotherapy should not be used) include: a recent history of epilepsy or fits, a history of drug abuse, a history of E.C.T in the last 4 years.
